Nigerian Automotive Industry Development Plan
Automotive capacity expanded from 5,000 to 450,000 units annually, attracting Honda, Nissan, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, and Innoson into the Nigerian market.
The Challenge
By 2012, Nigeria lacked a coordinated policy to attract OEM investment and develop local assembly plants, with no framework to create jobs, build skills, or reduce dependence on used vehicle imports.
The Impact
- Installed automotive capacity expanded from approximately 5,000 to 450,000 units annually by 2017
- Honda, Nissan, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, and Innoson (IVM) attracted into the Nigerian market
- Approximately 90% of previously dormant auto plants revived
